Understanding Pseudomembranous Colitis

If you have known someone that has had pseudomembranous colitis you may not be certain that it is indeed different than the other types of colitis that you may have heard of. This kind of colitis is caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the colon, usually associated with the taking of antibiotics that unintentionally mess up the careful balance of bacteria in the colon. This imbalance creates an inflamed colon which can result in watery, and sometimes bloody, diarrhea. Other signs can include fever, nausea, or cramps. Treatment usually will involve the doctor taking tests, getting information about the history of the symptoms with a medical history of antibiotic use, and finally treatment.
